Now Introducing…Freshman Amena Brent!

Freshman post player, Amena Brent, shares how her decision to come to Stetson has been one of the most rewarding decisions yet…

Choosing Stetson to play basketball as a Division I athlete and a full time student has been the wisest and most influential decision I have made as a young adult so far. Making the transition to living on my own and taking on responsibilities for myself has been challenging. Being an only child I do miss my parents dearly and my hometown of Chicago. I miss the city’s skyline outside my apartment window and the genuine city atmosphere I had in Chicago, but
the slow humble city of Deland is a change of pace that I am happy to partake in.

Being on the team with such wonderful and supporting teammates has made my time here even better than I expected. Every day is full of guidance and hospitality mixed with laughs and friendship that I have never experienced from a team before. Yes the basketball in college is a true transition, from the pace of the actual game to the mental aspect that goes into it every day in practice.

I also chose to come here because of the great academic program. Stetson is one of the top schools in the country and I am glad I chose to take advantage of my opportunity. Academically, the transition from high school to college has
been a big adjustment for me. However, my high school was big on advocating the college atmosphere during class, from walking from building to building to having block schedules (80 minute classes and only 4 classes a day instead of having all 7 classes at 50 minutes each). The athletic program helps athletes so much with study hall hours, time management, and tutoring if needed. This kind of help is very influential to all the incoming freshman athletes around Stetson because the transition from high school to college isn’t as easy for everyone.

Overall my time here has been life changing. I couldn’t imagine myself playing for another program let alone attending another institution. There is no other place in the nation where I would rather be than here at Stetson University playing for a remarkable Head Coach, awesome assistant coaches and academic advisors, and the best teammates/sisters I have ever worked and played with in my life.

Make It
A Great Day To Be A Hatter!!!!!
