In our first blog, Head Coach Lynn Bria discusses the start of the school year, the beginning of team workouts, and the many responsibilities the student-athletes share.
‘Tis the season for choosing dorm room decorations, meeting new and sometimes familiar roommates, filling up book bags with heavy text books, and getting notebooks and sharpened pencils ready for what seems like endless class time. Not to mention the hustle and bustle and endless adjustments to managing social and athletic responsibilities with the true purpose of getting an education. Oh, welcome to back to Stetson University for the 2012-2013 school year – I have been waiting for this day all summer!
With the newcomers reporting to school on August 18th, and with the stresses of moving in behind them, amongst the 950 freshmen that sat in the Edmunds Center awaiting President Libby’s welcoming address sat Stetson Women’s Basketball three freshmen: Amena Brent and Cha Cha Williams out of Chicago, IL and Sydni Payne from Conyers, GA. With their brightly colored t-shirts on with ‘Stetson’ printed on the front, they sat in anticipation of what would come in the days ahead of orientation: meeting new friends, figuring out the campus, and preparing themselves for the opportunities they had so long dreamed about.
A few days later our upper classmen moved in and it wasn’t long before I saw the 14 teammates, including the freshmen, spending much of their time laughing together, eating and hanging out together, and cherishing the moments they were already making. Did I mention school hadn’t even started yet?
Nearly two weeks later, school has not only started, but preseason workouts are underway. Our girls have been putting in work with a tough preseason regime that leaves them sore, but wanting more. With the intent and goal of a championship in mind, we are bound and determined to not only work together, but leave nothing unfinished. Three days a week bring about 6AM workouts encompassing a strict weight room workout, typically being followed by a conditioning session. Throughout the week a series of individual workouts are administered by myself and our coaching staff where ball-handling, technique, and drill work are emphasized and required with a great deal of intensity and focus.
The fun doesn’t stop there! Just as our coaches recruit players for Stetson Women’s Basketball, so do our players. Over the last few weekends, on top of workouts and completing school assignments, our girls have been great hostesses to a series of already committed and hopeful Hatter recruits showing them around the Deland, FL campus, competing against each other in an intense game of Gestures, and sharing their experiences here at Stetson and why they chose US!
Being a collegiate women’s basketball player is nothing less than a full-time job, comprised of significant responsibilities and expectations. As we make the turn into week three of school and workouts, our girls continue to impress their determination on and off the basketball court on not only each other, but us coaches as well. Roughly a week away from the start of the allowance of team workouts we are very excited of what’s to come and I look forward to watching our freshmen find their niche and our upper classmen take them under their wings!
